The Saltpan takes its name and its palette from the marais salants that surround it — the working salt pans of Loix, all silver water and pale sky. The building is deliberately modest: single-storey, whitewashed, with green shutters and a courtyard of tamarisk. Bikes lean against every wall, because on Île de Ré the bike is how you get everywhere.
Rooms are simple and bright, more well-kept guesthouse than luxury hotel, and priced accordingly. The kitchen keeps island hours: oysters and a glass of something cold in the afternoon, a short set menu in the evening built around the day's catch. Families are genuinely welcome, with a couple of larger rooms and a garden that absorbs children happily.
You come here for the rhythm — cycle to the market, swim off a quiet beach, watch the light go pink over the salt pans. It will not dazzle anyone chasing five-star polish, but as an honest island base with real character, The Saltpan is a keeper.
