A modern timber lodge under the Matterhorn, built for the walk in from the slopes and the long thaw by the fire.

Zermatt is car-free, so you arrive by electric taxi to a lodge that smells of larch and woodsmoke. The design is contemporary alpine done right — blond timber, felt, and a double-height lounge with a suspended fireplace framing the Matterhorn through a single enormous pane of glass. It is the kind of view that stops conversation.

We visited in late season for the walking rather than the skiing, and the lodge flexed well: boot room and ski storage in winter, guided trail maps and a packed-lunch service in summer. The spa is small but serious — a proper Finnish sauna and an outdoor hot pool that steams against the cold.

Half-board is worth taking; the four-course alpine menu changes nightly and leans on Valais produce. Prices are unmistakably Swiss, but service is precise without being stiff, and the Matterhorn view from the pool is one you will keep describing to people long after you get home.
